An ode to bonnie Scotland

“Fair fa’ your honest, sonsie face, Great Chieftan o’ the Puddin-race!”. Living in Scotland since ~forever~ has seen most of our Januarys spent rediscovering how to correctly address ye bonnie wee Haggis — and yes, of course we’ll be celebrating Rabbie Burns with a plateful of squished turnips, tatties and oat cakes (never really got the oat cakes tbh 😬).

For those with a fondness of this spirited wee slice of the world, we’ve pulled together our favourite titles featuring tales of Scotland’s rich heritage, landscapes and people. All of them, well worth a tip of the bonnet.

ØutThere: Spellbinding Scotland

With each issue an exploration of curious countries places & spaces from Marrakesh to Cape Town, ØutThere is a magazine dedicated to ‘experiential journeys’. Their latest issue, Spellbinding Scotland, is a joy to behold.

“It comes as no surprise to us that the official animal of Scotland is a unicorn. You’ll see it on the British coat of arms, symbolising the country’s strength, purity and pride. But the unicorn is also a colourful metaphor for individuality, hopes and dreams, treasures and exuberance, all the things that we feel make Scotland so unique — especially in what it offers ØutThere travellers. Scotland is a cornucopia of rich and fulfilling experiences: some old, some new, some borrowed, some locally (and brilliantly) conceived, which is why scouring the country to unlock some of the best and most ØutThere secrets was such a huge pleasure.”

Dip in for tips on the best places to eat and drink, discovering hidden historic sites, and idyllic spots to swim and rewild yourself. This 110 page gem is filled to the brim with stunning imagery and stories from the people who make Scotland so magical.

Command + i: a travel guide to colour

I was delighted when Alex from Command+i dropped into the studio to tell me about this truly cool publication.

Founders, Alex and Cameron (both photographers) meticulously study images of their surroundings to create a unique colour palette that shows a true appreciation for the natural world. Command+i is a guide to colour that is driven with a desire to help designers, artists and makers form a deeper connection with their environment through cultivating a more thoughtful process when involving colour in their work.

This issue features breathtaking images of the Scottish highlands, heavenly landscapes and enchanting architecture — each with a hand-picked colour palette to indulge in. A must for landscape lovers, photographers and artists alike.

Nutmeg: one man’s dedication to the beautiful game

Nutmeg is a delicious deep-dive into the history of Scottish football, written by people who truly love the sport. Their passion for the game and the part Scotland has played in it, is palpable. A captivating read for fans and novices alike, Nutmeg provides a perfect blend of longform journalistic articles and analysis of all facets of the sport, with fan stories and historical photographs providing an enjoyable snapshot of the changing face of the Scottish football scene.

“It seeks to leave no reader behind, covering both the science and the romance of the game; its sepia past and its uncertain future. It is a publication of substantial analysis on the one hand, and photographs of Cowdenbeath supporters in the rain on the other.”

Another brilliant title, dropped in to us by local legend, Ally Palmer who publishes and designs this in Edinburgh.

Being Edinburgh born and bred, we couldn’t possibly leave out our own pride and joy, Delicate Rébellion. An offbeat, independent magazine for people who are looking for something a little different from the world.

With a focus on creativity and collaboration, we’re dedicated to empowerment with positive and encouraging narratives, conversation and personal introductions to people who have captured our hearts. Commissioning and co-producing with artists and designers our pages encourage supremely gorgeous experiences to keep your heart afloat.

Thank you, thank you for continuing to support our artists, friends (and us!) — there is never an easy time for independent publishing. Sláinte Mhath 🖤
